Discover Hawaii

Hawaii Island's skyline is shaped by enormous volcanic mountains rather than a chain of sharp alpine peaks. Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai bring together three distinct parts of that island landscape, from the northern interior to the broad southern shield and the western slopes above the Kona coast.

The scale of these landforms is easy to underestimate on a small map. Mauna Loa occupies a vast part of the island, Mauna Kea rises to its north, and Hualalai forms a separate western landmark. An enquiry should begin with the island's geographical and cultural setting, allowing the appropriate places and activities to be agreed without assuming that every summit is an ordinary walking destination.
