Discover Maryland
Maryland's narrow shape hides considerable variety in its western high ground. Sugarloaf Mountain stands apart from the main Appalachian ridges, Quirauk belongs to the South Mountain area, and Hoye Crest sits much farther west on the Backbone Mountain landscape. Together they show how the state's uplands change from east to west.
The separation is an important part of this enquiry. Sugarloaf offers an isolated mountain setting near the Piedmont, Quirauk connects with the ridge country near the Pennsylvania boundary, and Hoye Crest supplies the state highpoint link. A journey combining them would cross several parts of western Maryland rather than remain within one mountain group, allowing the valleys and towns between them to shape the experience.
