Discover Oklahoma

Oklahoma's uplands occupy very different landscapes. Black Mesa belongs to the far western Panhandle, where the High Plains meet the country approaching the Rocky Mountains. Mount Scott and Elk Mountain sit much farther southeast in the Wichita Mountains, creating a contrasting pair of granite landmarks within the southwestern part of the state.

The two regions should be understood separately when planning an enquiry. Black Mesa is an extensive flat-topped landform with the Oklahoma highpoint on its upper surface, while the Wichita pair share a much closer local setting. A journey combining them would cross a considerable part of Oklahoma, gaining its character from the change between plains, mesa country and the distinctive Wichita mountain landscape.
