Three Peaks challenges in New Zealand

New Zealand's mountainous interiors contrast with coastal plains across its principal islands. Alpine landscapes, volcanic country and sharp regional climatic differences make the choice of destination central to a Three Peaks journey.

The landscapes of New Zealand

New Zealand's mountain landscapes differ strongly between its two main islands. The Southern Alps extend along the South Island, while the North Island includes prominent volcanic country as well as other uplands and coastal plains.

The South Island's Southern Alps separate western coastal country from eastern valleys and plains. On the North Island, the central volcanic plateau contains mountains such as Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. These are distinct mountain systems on different islands, with contrasting landforms and surrounding landscapes rather than adjacent stages of one continuous range.
