Three Peaks challenges in Venezuela
Venezuela combines northwestern Andes, central plains and southeastern Guiana Highlands. Its Mérida mountain country belongs to a very different landscape from the low Llanos and the high plateaus farther southeast.
The landscapes of Venezuela
Venezuela's northwestern Andes rise beside the Maracaibo lowlands, while the broad Llanos occupy much of the centre. Farther southeast, the Guiana Highlands form another major upland region. These landscapes are separated by extensive lower country rather than joined into one national mountain chain.
The climate is tropical across much of the territory, with more moderate conditions in the highlands. Mérida's Andean setting therefore differs from both the central plains and southeastern plateaus. The contrast between these regions is essential to understanding the geographical variety behind Venezuelan mountain destinations.
