Three Peaks challenges in Sweden

Sweden's western mountains contrast with lower, gently rolling country across much of the nation. The northern uplands occupy a different climatic and geographical setting from the more temperate south.

The landscapes of Sweden

Western Sweden contains the country's main mountain belt, contrasting with the flatter and gently rolling lowlands that occupy much of the rest of the territory. The northern uplands are part of a different regional landscape from the more temperate southern areas and the Baltic-facing lowlands.

The climate shifts from temperate conditions in the south towards subarctic conditions in the north. Latitude is therefore as important as elevation when understanding the mountain setting. Sweden's western and northern high ground forms one part of a much wider country of lowlands, forests and inland waters.
