Three Peaks challenges in Guatemala

Guatemala's mountain chains separate the Pacific coastal country from the northern Petén lowlands. The central highlands form a distinct elevated landscape, with cooler conditions than the tropical lowlands on either side.

The landscapes of Guatemala

Guatemala's mountain chains divide the country into strongly contrasting regions. The central highlands lie between the Pacific coastal country to the south and the extensive Petén lowlands to the north, giving inland journeys a clear geographical setting.

Tajumulco belongs to the western volcanic highlands near the Mexican boundary. Farther east, the mountains around Lake Atitlán and Antigua have different valley and basin settings. The Petén, by contrast, lies beyond this volcanic belt: its extensive northern lowlands should not be mistaken for a continuation of the Pacific-facing mountains.
